More beginners tips!

In this post I’m going to answer the top few questions I always get asked!

How do you clip SO many coupons?
Well, until a week ago- I used scissors and stacked 10 inserts at a time. Now, I have a paper cutter and it works wonderfully! Makes clipping a 20 minute job instead of 2 hours!

How do you keep coupons organized?
Well, I’m starting a new system (just sorted 2 days ago actually!) Here are my categories: In the very front is Checklane stuff (candy bars, gum, etc), Breakfast, Fruit & Veggies, Pasta/Ethnic foods (includes dry pasta, sauces, and pasta meals like healthy choice that are found in macaroni aisle), Canned foods (includes soups), Baking, Boxed foods (includes stuffing, hamburger helpers, boxed potatoes, etc), Condiments, Drinks, Refrigerated (includes dairy), Frozen foods, Beauty (this is a BIG one! I use 4 categories inside this one!) Soap/body wash, shampoo, makeup, feminine care, Laundry & Dishwashing, Paper Products & Cleaners, Baby, Pharmacy (which includes medicine and toothbrushing), Miscellaneous, and Pets.

Where do you get SO many coupons?
Well, I buy them from someone who mails them to me, then I mail them on to you ladies! I don’t make much money off of them, I more so enjoy spreading the word, and getting other people to use coupons!!

What coupon database do you use?
Easy! Money Saving Mom’s!! Here’s the link. Best of all, it’s FREE!

There aren’t coupons for ‘healthy foods’! How do you save on those?
You’re exactly right, there aren’t very often. It’s VERY rare to find a produce or meat coupon. Very rare! These are ‘staples’ at our house, and since we really don’t consume a lot of meat, it’s the one thing I do pay full price for. From time to time, Kroger puts coupons in their mailers for discounts off of entire shopping trips. Something like $5/ $50 purchase or $1 off $5 produce purchase. I take full advantage if I can find those!

What non-grocery/household items do you use coupons on?
I use coupons ANY time we go out to eat, or we order from the value menu. Since it’s just the 2 of us usually, we do mainly fast-food. I know, unhealthy! Chick Fil A is Addy’s favorite, and there are rarely coupons there so we go for Kids night on Wednesdays (formerly on Tuesdays!). Gas for my car is the other big one! Whenever I can, I use my Kroger points towards gas! You get points on any purchase made there BEFORE coupons! Which is SO nice. Tonight my total was over $100, and after coupons it was somewhere around $13. That’s a 10¢ off per gallon discount!

How in the world do you have time to use so many coupons when you work and have a little one?
Well, many of you may or may not know, my little one is going to be 3 soon, and is developmentally the age of about 18 months. She has lots of special needs and we are in therapy 4-5 times a week, and she also has preschool 2 times a week. Then, I work 3-5 days a week on top of that. Yes, it is crazy around here most days and I’m not sure how I’ve maintained sanity! But, I make it a priority to use coupons whenever I can because coupons allow me to not work a full-time job. Coupons, and selling thing on eBay on occasion. It’s impossible to work full-time with my little one needing so much extra attention/help! In a nutshell- it’s totally possible. Just takes an hour a week to organize/clip coupons! I do it after my little one has gone to bed, usually on Wednesday or Thursday while I’m watching shows I like on TV!

Is it worth it?
Yes, it is! I mean, who doesn’t love FREE or cheap? I love both! If I can stock up on a year’s supply of a single item and pay almost nothing for it, I will. It takes storage space, and I’m going to soon be losing my under-the-stairs closet. When we move, I’ll have to get a new game plan.

What’s your stockpile look like?
Well… .let’s save that for another post- because right now I’d be totally embarrassed to post a photo of it. There are bags laying everywhere in the closet, and some things are ‘homeless’. =)

Tips & Tricks, Part 1

It’s been asked so many times, and I want to help out anyone who’s a beginner! Tips and tricks are the two things I’m always asked for. So, here it goes! In this first post of 2012, I’m going to cover my own personal way of organizing my coupons and shopping lists. First, I always buy my inserts in multiples of 10. 10 for me each week, sometimes more (it really depends if there’s an awesome (to me) coupon in there!)

Here’s where I store my extra inserts. Inside I have hanging file folders with tabs and the date on the tabs. It’s a WRECK or I’d post a pic (we’ll save that for next week– so I have time to organize it better!). For instance, 1/1/12 on one tab 1/8/12 on the next. I put all inserts from that week in there. This is for clipped coupons only (inserts I’ve pulled from!). Aside from that, I keep all the un-cut inserts somewhere else. BUT, that is only because I sell them. Otherwise, I’d put them in a second hanging file in my box. I keep all inserts until the coupons inside have expired.

Once I get my inserts organized, it’s time to clip! At first I don’t clip every single coupon (only the ones I feel will be used. We can cover that subject in the next post! A local grocery store sometimes triples coupons up to either 99¢ or $1 so I have a separate section in my binder for those coupons I wouldn’t otherwise use (unless tripling is going on!).

Next, I put them in my binder! I printed a table of contents and pages to mark each section from the Krazy Coupon Lady’s website. You can find those here:

I use a standard Avery binder that cost something like $4 at Meijer. Like I said, I really don’t clip coupons I don’t think I will use, just the ones I know we will use (which allows me to use a 2 inch binder!). I organize them in baseball card holders, which has 9 pockets per page. I also have a mix of currency pages (found them on both amazon and eBay!) which has 3 horizontal pockets on each page, and makes it easier to organize coupons that are really long! Here’s what my binder pages look like when they are open

I am always open to new ideas!!! Does anyone else have a different way of organizing their coupons so they are more easily located when you are out shopping? I’m hoping this month I have budgeted enough so I can re-vamp my binder and get a new one! Also, feel free to suggest smaller sub-categories if you wish!
The categories I currently have for my binder are:

Updated Subscription Information

After doing some research in my Paypal account, it has came to my attention that I am actually losing money on most every transaction I set up. It’s my fault- I always estimate shipping cheaper than it is and I love giving people discounts! That’s just how I am: I love to help others. I don’t charge for my time to make money, just so I break even. Well, last month I lost almost $35 which is a copay for one of my daughter’s therapy sessions!

So, in order to ensure I don’t rip myself off again, I am going to do 2 things. First, I am going to make the price for my time to hunt down inserts, etc .50 per insert. (You are still saving 75¢- $1.25 per paper if you went to the store to buy your own!). Also, I am going to start only shipping flat rate envelopes. I can fit more in there, and don’t have to worry about the weight if one insert is really heavy!

Trust me, this isn’t something I wanted to do. Because, again I really like helping others. But, I’ve checked 2 other places that provide inserts and their prices break down to $3.32-$3.50 per 2 inserts (paper). My cost will remain at about $2.20! After that, I still feel like I’m passing on my savings and helping others out!! I want you all to know I love helping you and hope I can continue to do so.

Now for the math!! We all know I love numbers!!

Here’s what a monthly subscription might look like with 4 weeks in the month (8-10 inserts) for a customer who orders 3 of each:
Week 1- 3 of each insert (3) x.50= $4.50
Week 2- 3 of each insert (2) x.50= $3.00
Week 3- 3 of each insert (2) x.50= $3.00
Week 4- 3 of each insert (2) x.50= $3.00

To save on shipping, I ship bi-weekly.
Insert cost: $16.50
Shipping cost $5 for each envelope (flat rate envelope) $10
Total= $26.50
My cost= approximately $2.20 per paper

Company A charges: 5 of each insert= $17.50 per week That’s $3.50 per paper essentially

Company B charges: $1.35 per insert= 2.70 per paper, plus shipping ($3.94)= $3.32 per paper.

*** Please note, the per paper price for my subscriptions will be substantially less if you order 5, 10, or 15 inserts since you will be shipping more in one envelope! 🙂

Thanks again, I hope you all understand the changes that I have to make, and they will be effective with December subscriptions!

800 Fan Giveaway, Part 2

Here’s part 2:

Anyone can enter but only one entry please! If you entered the local giveaway you cannot enter here too, so please choose ONE prize to try to win, so we can make it fair to everyone.

For this one, you are entering to win a free copy of All*You magazine. For those of you who don’t know, it’s usually stuffed with high value or b1g1 coupons! The retail value is around $4 at Walmart. I will buy you the current copy, and ship it to your home. Just a little way for me to say thank you to my fans.

You can earn additional entries here too, by referring your friends. They have to comment on this post you sent them, and it must be separate from their own entry if they choose to do so. I’m sorry, I don’t know a way to make it easier for me to draw a random winner!

Good luck to each of you!

800 Fan Giveaway– Indy Locals Only

First things first! You don’t have to live in Indy, but you have to be willing to make a shopping trip in Indy with yours truly. Yep, that’s right enter on this post and you will have a chance to win a shopping trip/mentoring session with me. 🙂 I know, you’re all dying for this one… seriously I would have been so excited to shop with a ‘seasoned’ couponer when I first started!

What’s in it for you: I will join you on a shopping trip to help show you how I find my best deals. The store we will shop at will be 1 of 2 places: Meijer, or Kroger. Unless Marsh does another Tripling event, then it will definitely be there if you choose!

I can also show you how to organize your binder/coupons for maximum usage. My way isn’t the only way, but it definitely works for me when I have them all in the binder in their correct ‘homes’. 🙂

You may only enter once, and you must use your prize before December 31st, and set it up one week ahead of time!

Earn additional entries by referring your friends to my page, and them commenting here that you sent them, in a separate comment from their own entry! Good luck to every one!!!!!
